Does my auto insurance cover a bicycle accident injury?
I was recently contacted by a client who asked me if his auto insurance covered him when he was involved in a bicycle accident and sustained injuries. The answer is it certainly does. If you own a car and have auto insurance, that is going to cover you if you are struck by a motor vehicle, regardless of whether the at-fault party has insurance or not.
Assuming you have uninsured motorist coverage, your uninsured motorist coverage will cover you if the at-fault party does not have insurance. If the at-fault party does have insurance, you’re still going to be covered by your personal injury protection benefits here in Florida, and then the at-fault driver’s insurance company would step in for money above and beyond that.
With these insurance questions, certainly, they can be very tricky, so it’s important to speak to a knowledgeable attorney about what insurance may apply in which situation. We are here to help should you have any questions regarding these issues when involved in a bicycle accident.
